I know that photographing children, especially your own is rewarding, joyful and sometimes a challenge.
Every mom wants to capture moments of their growing little ones! So. I thought it would be great to share these 5 tips with you!
1. Photograph your child as they are (not as you want them to be)
Children naturally have the most honest emotions. They aren't as self conscious as we are and usually aren't as fake either. Their face tells you the entire story. So grab the shot as they present themselves!
In this shot, I think I was still fiddling with my lights. You can tell by the bored look on my sons face! Gah!
I took the shot, and now, it's legit one of my faves!
2. Sometimes, a little silliness goes a long way.
When you're trying to capture the moment, try becoming part of it! Become a kid again, let loose, joke around and make them laugh.
In this shot, I was in the middle of telling my son a story. By the look on his face, you can tell he loved it and thought it was quite funny.
3. Get down on their level.
Get as low to the ground as possible. When you connect with them on their level, the connection you get is so much more genuine and warm.
Connection in a photo is to me the most important thing.
In this shot, my son was going for the serious look. He's quite the model, these days, and I'm so happy he lets me create these styled shoots with him!
4. Loosen up on posing.
Honestly, I tend to find children naturally sit, stand or be, in very unique ways. Part of the great capture, is documenting them as they are. If you are attempting a specific pose, I'd say to move on quickly if they aren't "getting it"....take the shot, even though it isn't perfect, but move on. You'd find that they'll naturally create something you never had intentions of capturing.
That apple in the shot here, wasn't meant to be there. (see what I mean?)
5. And the number one tip!
Enjoy documenting, but don't forget that YOU are also part of the story!
Moms are always behind the lens, hardly ever in front of it. When your kids look back at photos, make sure they're are lots of photos of you that they can enjoy too.
I hope you enjoyed watching the portraits my son and I created. We had a blast creating them!
Thanks so much for reading!
